Most important is to go and see as much live theatre as you can possible afford. If you're on strict budget then there is now plenty of digital theatre available to watch across all genres and sometimes watching a film version of a classic can give you an entirely different perspective of that piece of theatre. Broad knowledge is good. But I also think if you have a connection and a passion for one specific writer, style or genre that is also a plus to be able to specialise in and become an expert of that genre or writer along with your broad knowledge and understanding

To establish credibility as a dramaturg, you need hands-on experience. Start by volunteering or interning at local theaters to get a feel for the production process. Offer to assist established dramaturgs or directors, even in small ways, to learn the craft from the inside. Each project you work on will not only improve your skills but also expand your professional network. Remember, in theater, reputation and relationships are key to getting opportunities to showcase your talents.

Join a local writer's group. My local group is associated with Queens Theatre, Hornchurch, an award winning theatre. With excellent support by Queens, they put on short plays every year.

Keep writing. Try different genre. Having written some modern and some revival plays, my best is based on Shakespeare revisited: When Marlowe met Shakespeare and when Shakespeare met Marlowe, a two-act play. Loved writing it. Hope someone likes it.
