When I listen to my clients with the intention to take in what they are saying and not to respond to what they are saying they may be taken aback. I get silent once they are done speaking, I need a few extra beats to absorb it all before responding. I’ve found when I already start pinpointing things I want to respond to while they’re speaking, I lose focus. Allow your brain the ease of listening, processing and then taking time to respond. Even if your response isn’t today, the most important thing is that you heard your clients wants and needs and problems with your full attention.

EQ in residential design is highly active with clients and I’ve noticed with commercial design, it’s highly focused on the clients guest experience. For example; “How would these design choices make the commercial space feel to the people experiencing it.” EQ isn’t something you turn on and off either so the same care and emotional support my residential clients need also carries over to my commercial clients who may be less personally attached to the space, but still are still passionate about their design goals. Interacting with people can sometimes lead to emotional discourse but it helps to try and follow the four agreements: Don’t assume Always try your best Keep your works impeccable Don’t take things personally.

Once on the job, make it a habit to attend industry workshops and read up on the latest trends in human behavior and design psychology to keep your skills sharp. Based on my experience, actively seeking feedback and learning from different perspectives helps you stay adaptable and innovative in your field. One approach I’ve found useful is regularly integrating new insights into your work, which not only enhances your design skills but also ensures you remain competitive and engaged in your career.
