Here's how you can enhance communication as a culinary manager by improving your public speaking skills.

One thing I have found helpful is to survey your audience prior to your talk or lecture to get a feel of where they are in your topic and what their interests are. It's always a challenge to speak to a widely diverse group of people. Whether it be age-range, ethnicity, cultural variations, or other, you can run the risk of alienating some, while "speaking the language" of others. My tips are: One) know your audience. Don't come into a meeting blind to who might attend. That helps you be prepared. Two) don't change who you are in order to "fit in." You will lose authenticity and trust. Three) respect that people are different and come from different circumstances. Approach the time with a sincere desire to bridge gaps and discover the common need or desire that you can help your entire audience discover.

Confidence is key to inspiring your team! Practice Makes Progress: Rehearse speeches in a safe space (mirror, trusted colleague). Know Your Stuff: Deeply understand your message for natural delivery. Embrace Imperfections: Confidence comes from handling mistakes with grace. Project Assurance: Your belief inspires trust and motivation! Be the leader your team needs!

I have found it very helpful to mingle and talk to the audience members before a speech if possible to get to know them a little and become familiar with who I am speaking to.

Be relatable, starting with a personal story. Follow this with a strong core idea. Practice every day to the point that you can pivot a bit if the audience isn’t engaged.

In culinary management, it is critical to engage in a friendly manner with your team, the customers and everyone you come into contact with. Notice something about each person you talk to and comment (examples: nice shoes, awesome tattoo, love the purple & blue hair color, exceptional drink or food creation). Remember people's names (associate each name with someone or something that will help you remember). People's names are the most important thing to them and everyone likes hearing their name. Compliments go a long way. Criticisms are taken harshly by sensitive people and do not usually help in any way. Be kind!
