As a Medical Director of an academic-affiliated community ICU, I’ve seen how critical adequate staffing ratios are in preventing burnout. When staffing is sufficient, employees aren’t constantly asked to cover emergencies, and they don’t feel guilted into extra shifts under the guise of “teamwork.” Real incentives, not just expectations to “step up,” are essential. Beyond staffing, encouraging mindfulness, hobbies, and time with family can help staff recharge. Preventing burnout means valuing healthcare workers as people, addressing systemic issues, and creating a culture where they feel supported and appreciated.

Something that I have found helpful in my 11 years experience in the stressful branch of emergency medicine is to debrief with a reliable colleague especially after highly stressful situations be it clinical or non clinical. It prevents stacking up of stress and avoids taking it home in most situations. Also making sure we remember self love and self care on a daily basis!!

To prevent burnout among healthcare staff facing crisis situations, it’s essential to prioritize hiring for resilience when selecting team members for departments prone to emergencies. However, resilience alone is not sufficient. Organizations must also provide competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and—most importantly—foster an open, emotionally intelligent team environment. Burnout often stems not from single emergency events but from continuous cycles of crises, chronic staffing shortages, and frequent organizational rearrangements. Addressing these systemic issues is key to sustaining staff well-being and preventing burnout over the long term.

In order to avoid burnout, employees need to feel valued and supported by their leadership . Recognition goes a long way! People who feel valued will always go above and beyond- but then their leaders need to encourage work life balance, to keep the good vibes going, in a sustainable way.
