Handling network migration setbacks: Be on time and prepared: Starting the day ready helps handle surprises effectively. Assess the issue quickly: Identify what’s wrong and its impact to act fast. Communicate clearly: Keep stakeholders updated with simple and honest information. Use backups: One thing I’ve found helpful is having pre-tested backups and a solid plan to minimize downtime. Stay calm and focused: Keeping a clear head helps solve problems faster. These steps ensure we tackle issues efficiently and keep the project on track.

When facing technical setbacks in a network migration, act quickly: assess the issue’s scope, communicate regularly with stakeholders, and implement backups to minimize downtime. After resolving the issue, conduct a root cause analysis to prevent future problems.

Preparation is key to any network migrations. Ensure full docs and network map is current, with subnets and relevant masks and gateways. Ensure any devices with static IP’s are noted, along with the network services they provide. Organise any large network migrations to be done in stages, ensuring that additional routers are at hand to enable particular sections of the original network to remain on the original subnet and be routed until any issues are resolved. Ensure any hard lan-lan vpns are configured and tested before migration and network services are in place, such as dns, dhcp ranges, gateways, etc. Ensure network services are covered by any new hardware. Check VLans, are configured and patching is correct with no loops.

To be perfectly honest the best plan would be to delegate the whole project to a cloud services provider who can sell, manage, operate and maintain the whole migration as a service. This would include the primary pillar of an accessible backup, ongoing test environments and support and the roll out as it was needed. Migration very rarely evolves as planned. Bring collaborative, flexible and trusting the process will pay dividends.
