Innovation projects often face pushback from stakeholders resistant to change. To turn opposition into collaboration, consider these strategies:
- Engage stakeholders early, involving them in the process to foster ownership and reduce resistance.
- Clearly articulate the value proposition, linking the innovation to tangible benefits for stakeholders.
- Address concerns directly by listening and providing data or case studies that alleviate fears.

I think the key to getting stakeholders to support the innovation project is to show them how they can gain a good profit from it. Redirect their fear and suspicion of the new ideas to a desire to achieve new goals and discover new benefits they weren't able to achieve using traditional methods. Stakeholders, in most cases, are looking for more benefits, more profit, and greater success. So don't think you can break through and convince them to support your innovation project or ideas if you don't articulate how it could push their business forward. Make them believe in your goals and your ability to deliver them. Get into their minds and replace the "may we lose?" question with "how and what may we gain?

Invite them to hear the feedback directly from the end user/customer. Those are the opinions that matter most for trial, engagement and a profitable sales trajectory.

Dealing with resistant stakeholders in innovation projects requires a thoughtful approach that combines empathy, communication, and strategic action. Start by understanding the root causes of their resistance. Often, stakeholders are not inherently opposed to innovation but may have concerns about risk, resources, or the potential disruption to established processes. Building trust is critical. Share data, case studies, or examples of successful innovations to demonstrate the potential benefits while addressing their specific fears. Transparency in the project's goals, timelines, and anticipated challenges fosters credibility and helps diminish doubts.

Drumroll, please… "Here it is: the completed prototype for our new project!" Standing ovation from stakeholders, support and praise everywhere. Sounds great, right? However, it’s wise to anticipate potential resistance, which may grow as the product nears completion. A journey taken together often feels more reassuring than being shown the destination only at the end. If stakeholders would feel more at ease by being part of the process, plan regular updates and feedback milestones. This builds their confidence and avoids wasted effort on something that might otherwise be rejected. That said, roles must be clear: too much interference risks turning a creative into a mediator, losing innovation along the way. And nobody wants that!

Understand and address stakeholder concerns by listening actively and aligning the innovation with their priorities, showing clear benefits and evidence. Engage stakeholders early in the process through co-creation and pilot projects to build trust and reduce perceived risks. Leverage champions and quick wins to create momentum, demonstrating success and gradually shifting resistant mindsets toward broader adoption.
