A small business typically has very little bureaucracy. This enables it to make rapid changes and constantly adapt to market conditions. In my company, if I see a problem and want to make a change I can do it in a day (or hours). In larger organizations you will always hear from employees what problems exist but it takes too many layers of people to make a change that is genuinely significant enough to solve most problems. This is why I could never work in a large company… change is too difficult. I love being able to decide something isn’t working and change everything immediately.

I wouldn’t say all small businesses are a step ahead , there’s many owners I’ve met that fall behind because they are small and can’t scale or delegate well, so they end up trying to wear all hats and generate less revenues from being spread too thinly. They can pivot quickly if they choose to, which is an advantage of a small business. A good example is outsourcing offshore or hiring the right person that gives the owner/s time to grow the business effectively.

As a small business or any business to be honest, the best way to "keep up or stay ahead" is to know your customer. Understand their triggers, their habits and form a real relationship with them through interactions, communications and awesome experiences. Use your brand/mission/culture to focus on what makes you unique and YOUR WHY. This will keep you from chasing every new technology/fad system. It is easy to get distracted by all the new when running a business but you must get in the habit of structuring time to absorb information about your industry, economy, competitors, new technologies ...so you can make strategic decisions about what to explore and implement and what not to. You do not need to do it all to be successful.

In an industry of commoditized services, the customer experience always wins. We call this hospitality for short - what kind of customer experience can I provide that makes our service stand apart from all others. If you are selling a product at the center of your service (like you are a coffee shop or retail store), how can I transform the customer experience in a way so that the customer remembers what they felt as much as how good the product is itself? This is what differentiates your small business from all the others around you.
