Language barriers are more and more common as the world shrinks due to the types of communication devices we own, and the spread of different cultures throughout the world. Some people think talking loudly and slowly is the way to handle this, but it might come across condescending. Slowly, or rather slower, might be fine, but you have to remember that the issue is not volume or a hearing problem, but a communication one. Visuals help when possible. Patiently listening, digesting, and confirming what was said is key to getting the message across. You'll have to watch your body language, as well, whether in person or on the phone. If you're rolling your eyes, or look frustrated, even on the phone, it shows.

In-person language barriers can be handled better than on the phone. Spanish is my first language and I have encountered issues like this. Thank God for the new tools that can translate into any language you need. I always love to take the time to translate for anyone who needs it when I get the chance.

Yes, Language barriers are more common these days. But thankfully with translating tools as close as your phone, it helps immensely. Or someone within the vicinity of the position is willing and able to help. A lot of people are picking up a second language. Hopefully it continues and it won’t be such a barrier in the future.
