I would first assess the extent of the loss and identify the root cause. Then, I would use the recovery tools provided by the cloud provider, such as snapshots, backups, or version history. If those do not work, I would consider third-party data recovery services. Meanwhile, I would review the migration process to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future, implement stricter data validation checks, and enhance backup strategies. Open communication with stakeholders is crucial throughout the recovery process.

First and most, make backup copies of everything you´re migrating, at least two copies. One of the copies should be sent offsite. Test the backups. Depending on the RTO, you might want to backup to disk. Also, a rollback plan should be developed in case the migration does not work as planned. Only after confirming that all backups are in place and ready to be restored if needed, you can start the migration.

As data moved, this sidecar service recorded all changes, deltas, and metadata into a secure, immutable storage bucket. When we encountered unexpected loss, we reversed the flow, replaying these captured deltas back into the primary system. By leveraging this sidecar approach, we minimized downtime, ensured data integrity, and gained a reliable backstop for any future migrations.
