You're working remotely. How can you build relationships with colleagues?

Face time can still exist remotely. Get in the habit of being on camera with your team and colleagues across the company as much as possible. While on camera, give them your undivided attention and truly listen and collaborate. If you're uncomfortable with being on a video call (like I used to be many years ago), your workspace has the power to influence how you feel. Give your workspace a makeover, or simply clear out the clutter and face a window. Not only will that work wonders for your lighting on camera, but it will also boost your mood. There is also power in meeting with individuals for casual chats, book clubs, and a break from "work" while you're at work. That is truly how you'll nurture your virtual relationships.

Video calls are great, but they work best when everyone is actually on camera. A company should have a policy that EVERYONE is on camera for all video calls at all times. Not only does this help with forging relationships and team chemistry, but it also helps keep the people on a call engaged in that call by making it a little harder to try and multitask during the call. On the flip side, also don't schedule formal meetings unless they are necessary and only include those are needed to contribute directly to the goal of the meeting. One-on-one video chats can also work to foster personal relationships on a more intimate level, and can be very helpful in a hybrid or all remote environment.

Trabalhar remotamente pode ser desafiador, mas pra mim as chamadas de vídeo são o meio para uma conexão mais próxima, já que além das palavras, podemos ver e perceber as expressões, gestos e emoções, trazendo um "quê" de presencial para o virtual. Seja para minhas reuniões de coaching ou consultoria, as chamadas de vídeo são a ponte que transforma a distante e garante as conexões improváveis, em conexões possíveis e reais.

Trabalhar de forma remota foi um grande desafio para mim. E em meu cargo de direção executiva de uma multinacional, para liderar, treinar, suporte e aumentar as vendas, para uma equipe de aproximadamente 300 pessoas, enfrentei diversos desafios. E um deles, foi a questão de participação da equipe nos treinamentos que eu fazia semanal via zoom (Plataforma de escolha do CEO), no inicio aproximadamente 30 pessoas entravam, era desanimador, essas aulas ficavam gravadas. Então decidi mudar. Não deixei mais gravada e os materiais da aula tinham senha de acesso que eu so liberava no final. Isso fez com que eles se comprometessem mais e foi uma estratégia que realmente funcionou em vários quesitos. Apos isso, a meta foi alcançada por 65% da equipe.

Ich arbeite hybrid, daher nutze ich, wann immer ich im Büro bin und meine Kolleg:innen persönlich sehe, die Zeit für Vor-Ort-Meetings, Coffe Dates und Lunch Termine und zum Austauschen - auch mal über persönliche Dinge. Und auch Remote ist das nicht unmöglich, nur etwas schwieriger. "Coffee-Dates" funktionieren auch digital im Video Call. Small Talk am Anfang von Calls ist ebenfalls möglich. Auch das Teilen von lustigen Dingen (z.B. eine Kundenmail) funktioniert über Slack etc.

1- Plan virtual social activities like games, casual chat sessions, or shared content to consume. 2- Set up a collaboration tool like Whiteboard or Miro to brainstorm projects together visually. 3- Eat lunch side-by-side on video to recreate casual in-person conversations. 4- Provide feedback privately but praise publicly in group channels to boost morale. 5- Be available via chat/video and promptly responsive to build trust in availability. 6- Travel to HQ or coworking space monthly if possible for collaboration sprints and socials. 7- Facilitate online community building with planned virtual team activities and traditions. 8- Consistency and creativity are key to maintaining relationships without physical proximity.

When managing remotely, use video calls whenever you can. The non-verbal side of a call is so important and you may even pick up on any challenges or issues which you couldn't have done over a phone call. A big must is showing your face, unless there is a real good reason to have your camera off then please make sure you are visible and engaged.

I often find that people over-complicate 'remote.' Try to think of Slack Channels, Microsoft Teams, or whatever other communication tools you use as your 'office'. Don't be afraid to 'walk around' the office as you normally would in a physical space and chat (huddle in Slack) with folks. Let people know where you are (i.e., set your status) so that they know your door is open and they can walk in. And, as always, don't forget that everyone also wants their own space and time, so be respectful and take the time and space you need. Tip: Create a public journal in Slack/Teams and share what you're working on/critical thoughts & moments personally and professionally. It's like decorating your office and showing your personality.

If you are physically in the same town, trying to grab a coffee is one good way to build relationships. If not, reaching out on regular channels to suggest a one on one call with coffee can also be a good tool. Youcan use these one one-on-ones to share more of your personal life and open up a bit.

Building relationships requires intentional effort and focus. Consistent and effective communication is key to fostering connections in a virtual environment. Make use of various communication tools such as video calls, instant messaging, and emails to stay in touch with your colleagues regularly. Ensure that you are clear and concise in your communication to avoid misunderstandings. Actively listen to your colleagues' ideas and concerns, and provide feedback and support whenever possible. By maintaining open lines of communication, you can build trust and rapport with your colleagues, even from a distance

Creio que clareza e objetividade seja uma forma eficazes de se comunicar trabalhando remotamente. Somando a isso destaco a intencionalidade das conversas, pois assim todos os envolvidos podem se preparar e se programar de acordo com o assunto. Dessa forma, definir pautas e horários, criam a objetividade e o foco para a discussão e resolução do que foi previamente programado.

Eu priorizo muito o respeito, ética, comunicação fácil de entendimento, de acordo com cada pessoa da qual você esta conversando. Cada resposta, deve ser individual, algumas pessoas não preciso ser tão técnica. Ter uma comunicação eficaz e diversificada para explicar uma coisa de varias maneiras, é essencial. Facilitando o entendimento e fazendo isso, você consegue criar uma relação com a pessoa, pois quando você se dispõe a explicar ate 100x e adequar a linguagem para aquela determinada pessoa, gera uma conexão de respeito, atenção e individualidade. Não existe um padrão, devemos nos adequar ao ouvinte.

It's so important to be yourself in a world of video calls. And when you're yourself, you'll find "your people" at work. I still have such great relationships with teammates at past jobs. We text, call, Facetime and continue to support one another in life because we truly care for each other's success and happiness.

This is not the time to be shy. Don't hesitate to share personal updates or anecdotes with your colleagues during meetings or in informal communication channels. Sharing a bit about your life outside of work helps humanize you and strengthens bonds with your colleagues.

Don't put yourself in a box, ask the questions you're unsure you should ask, be collaborative, remind yourself why you were hired and why you thought you were the best fit for the role and then bring that same energy each day.

Be yourself. Where possible, have your background on, this lets people into your world from a visual perspective. Quite often, they will pick up on items in the background which are relevant to your being and personality. Where applicable, bring humour/fun into video calls as much as you can. Putting smiles on peoples faces whilst getting your work done is a recipe for success.

Life involves ups and downs. Showing up for your team in small ways can make a big difference and help you earn trust. Offer help, lend a listening ear, and be understanding of each other's circumstances. Building a supportive and caring environment fosters trust and strengthens relationships within the team.

Always make sure that you make it clear that your door is always open for a chat on both work or personal related matters. In an office, you can monitor peoples behaviour and mood over a whole working day whereas on a video call it is harder to do as you only get a snapshot in time. Encourage breaks, walking, exercise, during the day so that colleagues dont get burnt out. Also, encourage honesty, if there is a problem then let people know they can speak to you on it without any prejudices or pre-conceived judgements.

Precisamos entender as dores e dificuldades de pessoas que estão aderindo ao digital e tem idade acima de 40 anos, das quais eu lido, muita das vezes eles tem dificuldade em preencher um simples formulário, mas isso não é culpa deles. Não é incapacidade. Vivemos em tempos diferentes... então, eu mando audio, faço passo a passo, gravo videos da tela de como fazer, e ja tive pessoas que não conseguiram, então eu mesma preenchia para eles. Se coloque no lugar do outro, pois o que eu sei eles não sabem, mas eles podem saber muitas coisas também que não sei. É um aprendizado e atenção mutua. Ajude o outro, pois você também vai sempre precisar de ajuda. Entenda o cenário e seja alem de profissional, humano.

Find ways to work together. Whether it's collaborating on documents, brainstorming ideas, or providing feedback, working together on projects helps foster a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.

Become a connector, not just a collaborator. Think beyond your immediate team. Utilize internal communication channels or create virtual social groups to connect with colleagues across departments. Introduce people with shared interests, and be the bridge that connects people that may not have otherwise had the opportunity to interact. What has helped me grow in my role is having a team that embodies the spirit of collaboration. We are always learning and growing, but also asking questions and asking for feedback. What has been the most rewarding part of my current role and company I work for is we are encouraged, and feel empowered, to contribute ideas to the team and the department's overall processes. Each of my peers is unique and brings creative ideas to the table, and that's what helps our team thrive.

Como educador sou suspeito para falar, mas acredito muito no "poder da troca", onde podemos aprender com tudo e com todos sempre. Porém, pra que isso aconteça, precisamos criar o "tempo e o espaço" para que haja a troca e crescimento coletivo.

Deliberately create time to know your team members outside of work. Don’t just say the customary greetings and get on with work. Ask how your colleagues are, be interested in their responses. Share information about yourself that makes them seek you as more than just a name on a screen. Work is more enjoyable when it feels like it arises from human connection rather than a necessity in the employment contract.

Embrace the power of micro-celebrations. Don't wait for big milestones. Recognize and celebrate small wins and everyday achievements. A quick shout-out on a team channel, a personalized virtual high-five, or even a funny GIF can show appreciation and boost morale.

This one is huge. It's easy to get hyper-focused on your daily responsibilities. But I'm currently at a company that is big on employee recognition. People are recognized every hour of the day on our portal across the organization for huge achievements and things as simple as 'thank you for offering to help; thank you for taking great care of our customers daily; thank you for boosting morale and employee engagement, etc.' We are never shy about telling someone they are doing a great job, and people need to hear it. Employee Resource Groups and monthly Happy Hours also give us creative ways to connect and have fun and exercise the other parts of our brain.

Yes, it's important to carve out time in existing business meetings for fun or for getting to know your colleagues but I strongly recommend taking it a step further: Book "meetings" with one or a couple of colleagues to ONLY chat and have fun. Maybe book a video call for a 5 pm "Wine"-Down or a "Laughing Lunch" or book some time to go for a 20 minute walk while you chat on the phone without video. Make it clear that the purpose of the call is for nothing other than getting to know each other. Then, if you hit it off, book the next while at the end of the first one or schedule it as a recurring monthly meeting. I have personally had great success with this approach to building remote relationships and I know many others have as well.

Stay positive and always have fun. On video calls, slack/teams groups, emails - make sure you recognise hard work, effort and good results. However, even some learnings or results which may have been deemed negative can be shared in a humourous way to help build team morale and spirit. You often learn more by the negative harsh lessons then the positive experiences.

USE Project Management Tools: Utilize project management tools such as Trello, Asana, or Jira to track tasks and collaborate on projects. Also, set set clear Expectations: Set clear expectations for deadlines, deliverables, and communication to ensure everyone is on the same page. Last but equally important, do Virtual Team Building: Organize virtual team-building activities or casual virtual meetups to maintain a sense of camaraderie and strengthen relationships.

The whole frame of this question implies that relationships are built better in person. Therefore, the best way to establish remote relationships is to get them as close to in-person as possible. -Face Times not Phone Calls -Text as how you would talk in the office -More Frequent Contact Of course this formula is not perfect but it's allowed me to maintain some great distance friendships.
