I would just ask engineering to do their best considering exactly what marketing and survey studies indicate, listening to what consumer are telling about their desires and needs.

In my view the dilemma is outdated. Today, I would merge Engineering and Marketing into a single team that works in parallel rather than in sequence. Their goal should be to understand what the client needs to succeed—even if the client is not yet aware of this need, or believes it to be impossible—and then work intelligently to deliver on it.

Marketing is a bridge between Design and the end user of the product, inputs from Marketing are crucial but in between there is necessity to consider the Benchmark analysis, Cost and the real usage benefits of the features which Marketing team is insisting....But there must be a concrete process for decision making so that Design and Marketing inputs are captured to benefit the organisation and End user both...

You just need to market what your engineers offer - focusing on the differentiators and how these could add value to your customers operations.. A customer would want to know why your product should be preferred over the others & your engineers should be able to feed that offer ! Market that ‘offer’ well!

I don't think one has to choose between the two. We need to design and engineer the best car that the market needs. Marketing tells you the type of car and engineering builds the best and safest product that fits the bill.
