The most important thing to keep in mind, is it is the Client's event and not yours. You need to find out what the client's vision is, then do everything possible to deliver it. While it is good offer alternative ideas, you need to let your idea go at the client's first rejection of it. I watched a Decorator try to assume the Coordinators position, and constantly push his own vision for the event. He got himself fired between cocktail hour and the main part of the event. If it is physically possible, and the budget permits, Give the client whatever they want.
