You're struggling with surveying accuracy and efficiency. Can drones be the solution you're looking for?
Drones are a game-changer for surveyors grappling with accuracy and efficiency. Here's how to integrate these high-fliers into your workflow:
- Utilize drones for topographic surveys to quickly gather detailed terrain data.
- Deploy drones in inaccessible areas to reduce risk and save time on foot.
- Implement drone data into Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for enhanced analysis and decision-making.

In civil engineering, we typically rely on imagery to plan the layout and boundaries of our projects. Most of the time, the surveyor must rely on satellite imagery to collect new data on foot at sites. But drones could in certain cases minimize the risks by collecting very precise data. this would significantly reduce planning time. Thank you for this sharing.

While drones do provide a solution, they are largely ineffective in dense forest areas to penetrate the forest and provide yhd ground contours. The alogarithms used for masking thick foliage lacks flexibility with the denseness of the cover. Also for off shore works they don't still work under water. And not possible to use in tunneling, etc. So an effectivity parameter study for specific use purpose is necessary to decide upon usage of drones for specific projects

No doubt , survey using images and drones have changed the whole gamut of survey . However , in my view particularly for linear projects like Railways; Highways and canal etc , drone survey is good for reconnaissance and preliminary survey only but for final location survey where alignment pegging on ground is required , it has to be done by instruments like Distomat, Theodolite and level instruments. May be in future we may able to do this also by Drones .

Drone surveys are less precise than conventional surveying equipment, such as Total Stations or GPS and is more time-consuming while facing accessibility limitations at difficult terrain. Therefore, when deciding between drone surveys and conventional methods, factors such as desired accuracy, Project requirement, time and cost constraints, and accessibility should be carefully evaluated.

Drones have certainly revolutionized the surveying industry, providing unprecedented accuracy and efficiency. I’m particularly intrigued by their ability to access challenging terrains and integrate data seamlessly into GIS. However, I’m curious about the initial investment and training required to implement drones effectively. Are there specific models or software you would recommend for beginners in drone-based surveying

One thing I can say is that Drones are very useful for the area where access is not easy and it can also increase the efficacy of work.

I recall we had to inspect a riveted penstock that we had repaired a few years earlier with carbon FRP. This was a part of our warranty inspection. The geometry included two 96-inch diameter pipes joining a 120-inch and a 25-ft drop in elevation. It would have been impossible to set up scaffolding and inspect the repaired area in the short shutdown period. The use of a drone allowed our team to finish the inspection well within the available time frame.
