I concur with the above statement. I'd also add communicating the desired goals within the community building is essential for success. Active Listening will be the catalyst for everyone being on the same page and striving for the same goals.

Own your positionally and how your identity and experience prevents your understanding of their lived experience. Craft open ended questions to guide your listening. Plan key informant interviews to meet with community members that have keen insight. Hold focus groups to gain perspective by listening to community member conversations. Test your listening by sharing what you learned and asking for feedback and clarification. Not only will you learn how to impact change but you will cultivate others who can co-lead in the process.

It is important to be present and not be thinking of how to respond. Most times we are thinking of how to respond instead of listening.

Communities like it when they are not observers but partaking in the topics presented to them. During planning to start conversations, ensure that the advert reaches all indented stakeholders to ensure ownership by all. By so doing, to avoid chaotic sessions or riots planned due to unhappiness.

It’s really important to put your personal biases aside but also relate and speak from your “I” meaning relating and be human to others find a point of connection and remove any assumptions.
