Identify key milestones and deliverables as that is likely to be what the non-technical audience is really interested in. Listen. Make sure you encourage the audience to ask questions to help them clarify the situation. Most people get really frustrated when a deadline is missed or when there is little or no information being shared as to the status of a project - so this first meeting is an opportunity to set guidelines, manage expectations and establish rapport.
