First a detailed SOW (statement of work) is needed to be able to fully understand what will be delivered. Adding milestones check that are reflecting the SOW time lines. Making sure the all project have a dedicated PM (project manager) and if need 2. Making sure a RED flag is raised if any '' show stopper" detected and needs immediate involvement of the costumer or other internal departments. Putting massive recourses on testing and QA on each milestone of the SOW.
