I agree with this idea, but I think that we, as instructors, must become a part of the conversation. One of the best ways to foster community is to lead by example. In my opening discussion forum, I respond to every student with a personal reply. I make a concerted effort to relate their post to my own experiences, my life outside of the virtual classroom, or by asking a follow-up question. When students see that we are engaged, I believe they become more interested and engaged. Everyone likes to know that someone actually reads their posts.
