From my experience, building rapport often starts with actively listening to your team members. However, the key is sometimes helping them feel comfortable enough to start sharing—this means proactively asking questions! While it’s hard to measure, you’ll quickly notice how much smoother projects become when you make the time to ask and truly listen.

Active Listening: Early in my leadership journey, I realized that listening—really listening—is essential in any cross-cultural setting. In one instance, I worked with a team member from Japan who was initially reserved. By giving them space to share their thoughts and understanding their communication style, I built trust and rapport. Listening more than speaking can make all the difference in any culture. Adapt to Communication Styles: Different cultures have unique ways of communicating. In my experience, some team members prefer direct communication (like in the U.S.), while others are more indirect (like in many Asian cultures). I’ve learned to adjust my communication style accordingly—being clear and respectful of differences.

Moving from the UK to the UAE has taught me key strategies for building rapport in diverse teams. I prioritise listening to understand each team member’s unique perspectives, goals, and priorities. Embracing cultural differences, such as traditions and work ethics, fosters mutual respect and trust. I ensure everyone feels valued by encouraging open dialogue and adapting my communication style to suit individual preferences, whether through direct conversations or collaborative discussions. Leading by example, being punctual, approachable, and consistent which helps build trust across cultural differences. Strong rapport creates cohesive teams, driving better collaboration and results.
