Use the differences in your favor, put the guard down. For example, dealing with different nationalities can sometimes put you in a position when using the "same language" words can mean the total opposite, well, use that in your favor, joke about it, that helps to put the guard down, use a familiar tone and use some of your words and make a joke out of it, soon there's a familiar feeling. This changed our cultural organization from a corporation to a cultural family, allowing us to now be getting ready to celebrate our 30th anniversary

Because my parents are immigrants they taught me first to acknowledge everyone in the room, they taught me that no one is better or less than me, we are all equal therefore if you treat all with kindness and compassion you will always win despite language barriers.

It is important to understand the basic nuisances and speak with compassion and passion. First listen to the client and then share ones perspective with conviction that would create all the difference one needs to work towards the set goals.

Be approachable as there will be a language barrier. There will be times where you will need to be patient. Ask each other what wasn’t understood in the conversation. Explain the situation in a different way to reach an understanding. Also be aware of the cultural differences. This would include the time zone, and how they want to be talked to.

My foster sons speak Khmer. I quickly met Cambodian American adults. And in 1995 I was assigned in NYC to coordinate groups speaking Spanish, Mandarin, Telugu, Bengali and Korean. While respectful listening and knowing some vocabulary is a start, I was frustrated that I was still at arms length. The breakthrough came as I started to visit countries of the culture and language of clients. I found a friend in each place to take me around and avoid the tourist perspective. The experiences made me more sensitive and knowledgeable. And the barriers in my NYC work were reduced or disappeared. And I had a great time!
