You’re a Management Consulting professional. What are the most important skills you need to succeed?

These skills are the table stakes. To truly crush it, a bit of an edge, instinct, and at times the grit to outwork others are required. Data is great, but meaningful insights are the destination being sought—to get there, you may have to see around corners, challenge assumptions, push boundaries, and have the confidence, courage, and conviction to think differently and sell bold ideas. At the end of the day, clients aren't paying for only fancy PowerPoints—they want meaningful insights that lead to meaningful impact. Be tenacious. Be fearless in your thinking. Be honest and transparent. And push hard to leave your mark. That's how to differentiate yourself from the others who are reading from a script or a canned set of best practices.

You should know how to use AI (ChatGPT, Perplexity etc.) in the most efficient manner. Second is deep thinking, passion for problem solving and have a human side to life.

In addition to the ones mentioned, I would add that you need empathy and emotional intelligence. It is critical that as a management consultant you envision the future for all stakeholders, by putting yourself in their shoes. I've seen too many times, where the strategies are focused solely on efficiencies, which is a valuable goal, but shouldn't be the only one. In my opinion, whatever initiative you take, it needs to both deliver positive ROI, and improve the lives of the end users. It's not one or the other, both should be taken into account.

Beyond the aforementioned: - Tech Proficiency: Mastery of data analysis tools and adept use of new technologies. - Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating potential risks is crucial. - Continuous Learning: Remaining updated on evolving methodologies, tech, and industry trends is essential.

I went from being a successful CFO in the private sector when I was 40 years old to being an independent consultant . My plan was to serve the corporate sector but a completely different skillset was required which I did not have! I pivoted quite quickly and successfully to doing consulting work for international development and humanitarian relief organizations ... World Bank, the United Nations, etc. where much of my experience could by used usefully. Quite quickly my acceptance as an independent consultant in this environment went downhill. There is a difference between managing for real success and creating the appearance of success by hiding incompetence and failure. Calling this out is rarely successful in big bureaucracies.

Here are some helpful skills to succeed: You need abilities to understand complex issues from different perspectives - this requires a skill of asking meaningful and revealing questions. You need abilities to make a hypothesis of the issue at hand and find ways to test it and then make conclusions on its validity. You need to understand the numbers contributing to issues at hand for you to be able to pinpoint areas of improvement. You need critical thinking and understanding of cause-and-effect in the environment you are dealing with to make proper recommendations.

The first 3 most important things: 1) Listen, 2) listen, 3) listen. In my experience over the years, perhaps the most important thing I have learned is that in that first meeting, I may not know much about the issue at hand, BUT whatever my prospective client says they need is likely the last thing they need. So listen to what they say the problem is, not what they think the solution should be

Many consultants think that communication is outwards i.e. from them to others. They forget the arguably more important part, namely listening. The best consultants are the ones who listen diligently, intelligently and sensitively, then react in real time before opening their mouth.

This is largely about stakeholder management. A common challenge, surprisingly, is being unable to identify the set of stakeholders involved in the project. The second challenge is to find access to the right stakeholders to walk them through the progress of the project. The third challenge is to get the senior members from your team to engage with these stakeholders.

The ability to articulate your findings/feedback/ challenge in a way that resonates with the client or audience is key. And that does not mean that you learn to speak in soundbites, parotting what's in the report. It means developing self and situational awareness, the ability to convince and sell and, as has been noted by others cultivate an ability to exert influence without authority.

There is no one solution that fits to all problems. Gaining higher grounds understanding the problem is the first step. Once this stage is arrived then only one can evaluate the cause behind the issue. A clear understanding of the situation can help arrive at appropriate solution available at that moment. Being unbiased towards the problem also helps considering a neutral perspective aka unbiased solution.

In addition to these skills, strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential in management consulting. Building relationships and influencing stakeholders require active listening, empathy, and understanding of diverse perspectives. Presenting ideas confidently, diplomatically, and convincingly is crucial. Collaboration, cooperation, and negotiation with various interests are also important, as is handling feedback, criticism, and conflict constructively. Mastering these interpersonal dynamics enhances effectiveness in delivering value and achieving success in the consulting field.

There is too much charlatanry and hot air that is sold to the client at high cost and with a vague goal-orientation. As a consultant we must model the behaviors, attitudes and skills that we wish to develop in others. Being self aware crucial to being an effective leader and consultant. A successful consultant has a love of self improvement, and this comes through in the way they approach their clients, attitudes they demonstrate and the unwritten or non verbal communication that gets shared in every interaction.

In my experience, there are three core skills that you need to have as an effective management consultant - 1) Problem-solving 2) Structuring 3) Ability to build trust (Empathy + Authencity + Competence) And all three are needed.

For me, its the classics: Integrity and Empathy. Consulting is all about the people - your client, your team and your stakeholders. Technologies come and go. Being able to really connect with people and help them be successful is what good consulting is all about.

The first and foremost important skill you must have is the ability to listen. You must then be able to assimilate information quickly and understand what you are hearing to build the confidence of the speaker/client that you heard what they are saying and understand it and are able to ask the appropriate follow up questions to further draw out the information you need to do your work. But again, you really have to listen for things that sometimes are not being said to ensure you are building trust and confidence and are able to complete your task.

In my experience, intellectual curiosity is the number one trait in a successful consultant. No topic is too big or small to try to understand and solve

In addition to the above-mentioned skills, the below are also critical: 1. Strategic Thinking: Understanding the bigger picture, anticipating future trends, and developing long-term strategies to help clients achieve their goals is crucial. 2. Problem-Solving: Being able to identify issues, brainstorm solutions, and implement effective problem-solving strategies is a key skill in consulting. 3. Adaptability: The ability to quickly adapt to changing circumstances, new challenges, and different client environments is essential in consulting. 4. Client Management: Understanding and meeting client expectations, providing excellent customer service, and building trust with clients are key skills for success in management consulting.

I believe most of the skills above are table stakes to participate in the adventurous game of management consulting. However to SUCCEED in Management Consulting, 3 important skills that havent been explicity mentioned and feed into pretty much all of the above are 1) Curiosity 2) Empathy 3) Courage There will be many times when you will be pitched as the subject matter expert to a client and being able to listen, respond, articulate, etc are all valid only if you have taken time to be curious and have the courage to engage with senior stakeholders, including the courage to challenge thinking and earn trust of your client. Having empathy to manage your own team and work with peers will place you in a league above as a leader with time!

Consultants should do the following to provide evidence of their value to their prospects: 1) gain client trust; 2) understand the client’s organization; and, 3) lean in to the challenges of the virtual/hybrid world. Best in class consulting firms have knowledge of the prescriptive process of identifying issues and problems. Yet, the unique differentiator is the ability of the consultant to communicate uniqueness of their consultant's firm, and the uniqueness of the client’s organization--not just issues and problems. The capable firm will dive head on into the challenges of the virtual world while addressing the critical work needed to satisfy their client. Consultants that take this approach will thrive and will be valued by the client.

In my years running a consulting firm, I often reminded our team that clients don’t want to pay for a long learning curve. The best consultants succeed by doing their homework and asking incisive questions at the outset of each engagement. Unfortunately it’s long been true that some of the largest firms expect inexperienced staffers to learn their jobs at client expense.
