Provide regular feedback via one-on-one check-ins, recognizing achievements and addressing challenges. Reinforce SRE principles, emphasizing monitoring, incident response, and root cause analysis. Regularly adapt expectations through feedback and retrospectives to ensure continuous improvement.

Setting clear expectations as a team leader is crucial for fostering alignment, accountability, and productivity. A few things come to mind when thinking about clearly setting expectations. 1. Provide Structured Onboarding and Training. 2. Communicate the team’s mission and how their work contributes to organizational goals. 3. Clearly outline each team member’s role, their specific tasks, and their areas of accountability. 4. Highlight your expectations for continuous learning. 5. Encourage them to take ownership of tasks and come up with solutions before seeking help. 6. Recognize good performance and provide constructive feedback when needed.

In setting expectations, I’ll do well to identify the strengths of my team members. This will guide in assigning tasks and responsibilities to them. Next, I’ll be sure to identify if there are improvements they hope to achieve in some other area of their skills. After doing this, tasks and responsibilities will be attributed based on these criteria and the expected outcomes from the project will be outlined early so they know the target. Before starting, there will be an intentional outlining of possible challenges that might try to disturb the progress of the project and how to overcome them. Along the delivery of the project, there’ll also be periodic meetings to look on growth and how much of the expectations have been met.

Regular check-ins and transparent feedback loops(don’t take me wrong I suggest to make these interactions in a friendly and a casual way) are key to keeping them aligned and motivated. I emphasize continuous learning, encourage questions, and provide resources for skill-building, fostering an environment of accountability and growth while making sure they feel supported in their roles.

When defining expectations they should include the impact of the team members work in the bigger picture. Explain how the team members contributions fit together like a puzzle into the workings of the company or project. Second, communication should be high priority on the list of setting expectations, encouraging team members to ask questions to ensure clear understanding. Finally, ensuring team members have a clear understanding of processes and procedures gives them a solid foundation and the confidence to handle their tasks.
