You are there to work, so start with the level that will make the communication functional. It’s not bad to show you may struggle with exchanges that are heavy on cultural stuffs. Open yourself to learning and encourage the people around you too. Make it fun, but in no way hindering your efficiency and productivity.

To mitigate this challenge: leverage technology, understand cultural differences, promote mutual respect. A potential strategy to adopt is a combination of Fishbowl Window (Virtual) and Speech-to-text engine, such as google translate. Provided that an agreed time has been set for a meeting, the fishbowl window ensure focused discussions where some participants actively engage while others listen, and the listening parties will have time to capture the speech real-time and transform them to a readable texts in their choice of language with the help of Google Translate
