You're hosting a library event. How can you make marginalized communities feel welcomed and represented?
To ensure marginalized communities feel welcomed at your library event, it's crucial to create a space that reflects and respects their experiences. Here are some strategies to achieve that:
- Collaborate with community leaders to co-create the event, ensuring it meets the needs and interests of those you wish to include.
- Curate diverse materials and resources that showcase a wide range of perspectives and voices.
- Provide accessibility options, such as sign language interpreters or materials in different languages, to accommodate various needs.

Plan activities specialized for each group. If it is a forum, invite panels with different background. If it is a carnival, you can have different activity for different group, for example, story telling technique for children in one room, talk on financial sustainability for parents in one room, info hunt competition for teenagers, booth with different type of sellers or companies at the lobby and film show at the theatre.

Advertise and promote the program in ways that are accessible themselves. For example- have signs with large enough print that is easy to read. Make sure the event information and registration (if applicable) are easy to find on the library's website. If there is a large community of speakers of a particular language (and staff fluent in it), you can even have flyers in that language or have the staff member be available for translating and interpreting. Finally, avoid loud noises, bright flashing lights, and other common sensory triggers.

For example, a library event is being organized as a learning and sharing opportunity for marginalized communities. Participants will tour the library to get familiar with its services, resources, and activities. Next, they'll learn how to access these services, especially through community outreach programs. Finally, they'll share their service needs, and if their institution plans a library, they'll receive guidance and support. In summary: ✅Introduction to library services ✅Access for marginalized communities ✅Feedback and future service discussions This event will help marginalized communities feel welcomed and represented, making the library a key part of their support network. #LibraryForAll #CommunityEngagement #LibraryEvent

I think my organization really tries to focus on people with overlapping identities, like race and gender. We ask for feedback regularly to keep improving inclusivity and make sure we use respectful and fair language for everyone. Avoiding bias is important, but it can be hard to get it right all the time. Still, I believe our library is a safe space for students. We also have a decolonization program to make sure our materials reflect the community's diverse backgrounds. Plus, we use different platforms to promote events and make sure the messaging is welcoming and accessible. The larger organization also offers language services and courses to support inclusivity.
