You're focused on cost savings. How do you see the value in sustainable design for your stakeholders?

Sustainable design offers long-term value to stakeholders through cost savings, improved efficiency, and enhanced brand reputation. By reducing energy consumption and minimizing waste, it lowers operational costs. Sustainable buildings often qualify for tax incentives and increase property value over time. Additionally, eco-friendly designs attract environmentally conscious clients and investors, improving market competitiveness. For stakeholders, sustainable design is an investment in future-proofing the business, enhancing both financial performance and social responsibility. This holistic approach demonstrates a commitment to sustainability while delivering measurable financial benefits.

Make sure to assess the profitability in the long run, don't just be blinded by the upfront savings. I personally was guilty of this. Lighter meant cheaper and easier to transport; reducing the carbon footprint of material sourcing. We even assessed the lifecycle of the materials. But little did we know that lighter didn't mean more durable. We saved money in choosing lighter materials, but in the long run we made a loss which costed us not only money, but also our time.

To highlight the value of sustainable design for stakeholders focused on cost savings, I emphasize how sustainable practices lead to long-term financial benefits. I showcase how energy efficiency, reduced waste, and durable materials lower operational costs and maintenance. Presenting case studies and data that demonstrate return on investment and enhanced property value further supports the case. By aligning sustainability with financial goals, I show that eco-friendly design not only meets environmental objectives but also drives significant cost savings and increased profitability over time.

According to HBR, people today care significantly about a brand’s sustainability. This trend is particularly strong among younger generations like Gen Z, who prioritize sustainable and ethical practices over brand names. In fact, up to 70% of consumers are interested in what brands are doing regarding sustainability. For brands this suggests that even if going sustainable don't seem financially viable, more customers mean more profit in the long run. But don't just design a green packaging call your brand sustainable.

I have mentioned this before in my contributions, but when turning to a sustainable design, you need to be careful in your communications to potential customers. Yes, this can deffinately elevate your brand, but if you use wrong wording, or wishy-washy statements, you can be accused of green-washing. Remember that no one can be 100% sustainable, so state your future plans alongside a report of what you've already done. Make sure you report measurable and clear data.

Honestly, if your brand is already established and you are now making it sustainable, your existing target audience will most likely remain primary customers. They will take the sustainability factor as a bonus thing, which is not bad of course. But if you expect to tap into a whole new segment, then you will need time to build this, don't expect that things will happen overnight. You need to have a very clear and strong voice, so you can communicate the positive changes you are making.
