Our data center is protected from power outages by a redundant battery backup system. If we lose municipal power, the UPS battery backup kicks in until the diesel generator has time to fully spool up. When the generator voltage is sufficient, an automatic transfer switch cuts us over to generator power. We can run like this for days or maybe weeks as long as we can keep fuel in the generator. Most of the critical services and applications required to run the university are replicated in our disaster recovery site, so if we have a total power failure of the data center, we can run from there.
