First, be clear with stakeholders as to whether you are seeking consensus OR simple guidance toward already-established goals. Not all solutions are open to consensus -- there may be hard-limit requirements to be satisfied FIRST, such as regulations or compliance to prior implementations / "shop standards". EXAMPLE A: sales tax calculation is dependent upon statute & regulation; compliance limits how and when to calculate the amount. EXAMPLE B: the standard database software for the company may already be selected; consensus within the current project begins with either adherence to that standard OR agreement that a variance is REQUIRED to meet newly-discovered needs (and generate a will to challenge the existing choice[s]).

In software design, differing and sometimes conflicting opinions are common. As a leader, it can be challenging to reach consensus in these situations. However, pursuing consensus can lead to delays. A better approach is to make a well-informed decision and focus on gaining alignment afterward. This doesn’t mean ignoring team input but ensuring all views are considered before acting. Clear communication of the decision and its rationale helps the team understand the direction, fostering ownership and accountability, which drives faster, more effective progress.

Consensus on opinions isn't really required. Usually the right answer to different opinions is to test it. If that is not an option try to find why the parties prefer one solution over the other. Trade offs and risks is always involved in different designs. You can make a decision on which ones you can or cannot accept. Also try to find out how you would know if the design was the right choice and what todo if it isnt. Validating decisions as early as possible helps reducing the impact.
