In my quarter century plus experience, I have not seen a day - be it in service delivery, solution architecture, implementation (even sales/ presales) - without resource constraints. A couple of honest devices that have helped tide over this perennial problem: (1) Understand that “Perfect is the enemy of good”, while building a team - deploy leads with a combination of growth mindset and mentoring skill to guide a team of skilled, semi-skilled, and downright inexperienced folks as Plan A, and not a fallback option; (2) Transparent discussion with the customer with a focus on business priorities and outcomes rather than merely the contractual aspects especially in crises times like the “Great Resignation” during the pandemic.

As someone who has managed teams, delivered to clients and faced resource constraints, i can suggest three ideas: 1. Prioritize: Define criteria to prioritize clients and also deliverables. Identify dependencies, plan resources and sequence of execution. 2. Form task-forces: Combine forces from different teams to manage crisis. This helps in giving exposure, cross training and talent identification. 3. Involve client: One excellent method i learnt from top consultants is it is wise and sustainable to involve clients in solution. Of course this has to be done carefully and as a plan and not as areaction to a crisis. Clients appreciate it as they feel they are part of the solution and can take it forward once consultants leave.
