Show empathy for their unique situation and clearly define the scope, measurable outcomes, and timelines. Next, identify multiple solutions, select the one aligned to objectives, and create a plan with smaller, measurable milestones. Break the solution into phases & implement milestone by milestone, testing each for positives, negatives, & edge cases. Throughout the process, be consistent, maintain open communication, & co-create solutions to ensure the client stays engaged. This approach fosters trust, transparency, & long-term collaboration while delivering meaningful impact.

The Education Industry is transforming a “functional” = academic to a “business” = student driven agenda. Helping those that are involved involves bringing an “out side/ in” and an “end to end”approach that supports new experiences, roles, performance metrics aligned with changed governance and digital systems amongst other things. So there is always a question (particularly those seeing their role power diminished) on why do “I” need to change as a Headmaster, Teacher or Administrative Officer? A good consultant helps those they are working with to realise the changes needed and “why”. Also to reinsure that they aren’t the first industry to go through these types of changes…and it will make our grandchildren more competitive globally.

Active listening is not enough. It is essential to recognize the context, identify profiles, and, most importantly, uncover what motivates and engages people. Each educational environment is unique, and without genuine immersion, it is impossible to gain the necessary insights to support any action.

I do a fair bit of business in EDU and its a different world. Know the terms, where you will be at risk, learn the proper way to get POs, the way they like to pay and do what you say you will. A lot of times schools will have to weigh available funding, grant programs, subsidies, etc... and some of them only allow specific solutions or products, which might be outside your standard offering. It is good to stay in the know on these things, get eligible or get positioned to make them eligible. It will only reward you. Then learn how they budget, what they buy on (dollar amount or quality), how they bid, award, and issue PO's. Then stay in touch, don't push, and build a relationship. Most of the directors end up moving to administration.

Transparency is also vital. Clients appreciate honesty about what can realistically be achieved within the constraints of time, budget, and resources. If challenges arise, addressing them openly rather than glossing over them builds credibility. It’s important to frame these discussions as collaborative problem-solving opportunities rather than setbacks.
