Depends on the role of the product that is being delayed. For critical parts of anything I work on, I avoid anything without a guaranteed supply chain and quick delivery; this drives many of my design decisions. For other 'nice to haves' it's often not that difficult to find a semi-functional substitute.

They will also reserve some buffer time to avoid delays, as specified in the contract. During the production period, you need to periodically check the status of every important part and step, by using pictures or documents. If any issues arise, both parties must discuss them and find the best solution.
