Your theatrical production's lighting designer has big ideas. How will you manage when resources fall short?
When your lighting designer's grand ideas eclipse your budget, it's crucial to find a creative yet practical middle ground. Here are a few strategies to make the most of your resources:
- Collaborate on prioritizing elements that have the maximum impact within budget constraints.
- Explore cost-effective alternatives like renting equipment or using software simulations.

I am the lighting designer with big ideas and I can say this: Big ideas are not Bad, Dangerous, or even (necessarily) Expensive. It's usually a matter of granularity and scale. Even the idea of a "Big Idea" is vague - but your research should guide you toward a clear visual goal; Your team's consistent conversations will guide you to a big picture into which your ideas fit (Remember to EDIT toward the good of the piece); And experimentation should lead to the right implementation techniques. Ask SO MANY clarifying questions of yourself and your collaborators - Big ideas need clear paths for experimentation, and implementation. With a clear vision of the end goal, resources simply become a question of scale and proportion.

Criatividade é sempre a saída para poucos recursos!!! Vale até mudar a direção da apresentação, as posições ou a forma como a história é contada!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏

First off, meet with your designer to make sure that their vision is in line with the main vision of the production - if their vision extends beyond the feasible reaches of the production, it's best to collaborate on a more cohesive lighting design that works with the given show. Second, if their design fits with the vision of the production but extends beyond the limits of your financial resources, collaborate with the designer to take the essence of the design concept and minimalise it. In this way, you can plan a more conservative design that honours the original design's intention.
