"Any man who has to say 'I am the King' is no true king." This quote from Game of Thrones is a great quote on leadership. The best leaders put personal glory aside and save the accolades for their teams. At fassforward, we believe you shine light on the best performers and praise publicly (and critique and provide challenging feedback privately). However, sometimes it is the personal accolades that have the most impact. We have a client that sent a text message to a member of her team that said "you rock." Taking time to reach out to that person directly, and those two words had significant impact. A great habit for leaders is to take time each week to personally acknowledge a success, win, or contribution of someone on your team.

A leader understands that they are nothing without their team. The main job of a leader is to support the team, provide them with the tools that they need, clearly communicate the objectives and coach where needed.

Of what good will personal glory be if the team’s success is compromised? As a leader, I understand that the true measure of achievement lies in collective progress. When the team needs me to prioritize the greater good, I focus on aligning my actions with our shared goals. This means stepping back when necessary, giving others credit where it’s due, and making decisions that benefit the team rather than seeking personal recognition. True leadership is about empowering others and ensuring that everyone feels valued. By putting the team first, we not only achieve our goals but also build trust and a sense of unity that drives future success. I believe collaboration always outshines individual effort in the long run.

At every stage of my journey, whether leading teams at GRASPP or creating solutions for CleverPe and Aura Digital, I've learned that collective success trumps individual glory. I ensure teamwork remains a priority by: Recognizing Strengths: I celebrate each teammate’s contribution, no matter how big or small, to foster a sense of ownership and pride. Sharing Wins: Success is never an individual effort. Acknowledging the team’s role builds trust and camaraderie. Aligning Goals: Keeping a shared vision at the forefront ensures that everyone feels connected to the mission, driving unity and focus. For me, the true win lies in seeing the team thrive and knowing I played a role in creating that synergy.

Here are key tactics: Empower Team Members: Delegate tasks and allow them to take charge, encouraging responsibility and initiative. Clear Communication: Foster a supportive atmosphere for exchanging thoughts, encouraging collaboration and innovation. Build Trust: Be truthful and reliable to create a basis for successful collaboration. Supply Resources: Guarantee that essential tools and resources are accessible, eliminating performance barriers. Acknowledge Minor Victories: Honor each achievement to enhance enthusiasm and vigor. By adopting these practices, you foster a cooperative and encouraging team atmosphere. As Andrew Carnegie said, "Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision."

I've found the most effective way to accomplish this in my teams is by adopting a Servant Leadership style. The rule I have for leading my team is this: Everything that went right was all because of them and their impressive strengths. Everything that goes wrong is always because of me, and me alone. I will never throw them under the bus. It's big talk, and it's not for lazy managers. But, once your team sees you back up your big talk, the rest falls into place.

Create more opportunities for other Team members to take the lead in coordinating tasks till they can incrementally take on more challenges. You must sometimes learn to lead from behind and allow others practice gandson, what Teamwork is truly about.

Rising to the challenge of putting aside personal glory for the greater good requires a mindset shift towards team success over individual recognition. I believe that true leadership is about enabling others to shine and achieving collective goals rather than seeking personal validation. By prioritizing collaboration, transparency, and shared goals, I can contribute to a team dynamic where the success of the project or organization outweighs individual achievements. This mindset not only drives better results but also fosters a culture of mutual respect and growth.

When personal glory takes a backseat to the greater good, it’s an opportunity to showcase true leadership. It’s about focusing on the collective vision, empowering the team to achieve a shared goal, and making sacrifices for the long-term success of the organization. As a leader, always believe in building a culture where collaboration outweighs individual recognition. By putting aside personal accolades, you will inspire growth, foster innovation, and align on a common purpose. Rising to this challenge means setting aside ego, trusting the team, and knowing that success as a group is far more fulfilling than personal triumph. Together, you’re unstoppable.
