Workload or workload spike is also an enjoyable part of the work if that is seasonal and not permanent. Seasonal workload spikes are inspiring and often memorable. Every job has its seasonal load and that’s the fun part. So it is important to understand the difference between seasonal load and permanent increase. In case of seasonal load, using adjunct support would help but we must develop a positive acceptance towards seasonal load, must be prepared towards it and celebrate it post the season. To manage permanent load increase you need to analyse the place in the workflow where it is impacting and why. Adding a manpower or machine or software without analysing the above would be adding more issues to the current misery.

For instance, in a project peak, I did monthly check ins to redistribute tasks and offer speedy help. While stress went down and productivity stayed up, the team saw how support is there in the midst of trials.

This is a matter of a conducive, i.e. positive, open, and supportive culture, management processes, and skills that team members should adopt. Open communication is needed to speak about potential challenges. Mutual support and feedback helps to overcome challenges and get better. A solid process of (re-)planning and weekly reviews lay the managerial foundations. Guidance and encouragement are a must. We all need stress management skills to effectively deal with pressure. A positive mindset is the basis for a bounce-back ability. So are self-care, self-awareness, and time management. Having regularly some fun as a team helps.

People feel overwhelmed when they lose control of their work. Are the workload spikes caused by overcommitment from management, or is it the lack of employees to do the work? A good boss will know what their team can handle, properly align expectations, and at the same time develop their people to handle more than they think they can. Understanding the process flow in getting the work done, finding ways to reduce redundant steps, and setting systems for tracking progress will help the team know how and where they can improve. In the end, the boss is responsible for their people’s strength and the work accomplished.
