I think that physical presence is crucial in this case, no matter if it's significant presence or just faint presence. You already had the finances needed to scale even a remote team, and it should be no problem for you to just hire one to two representatives. If the remote team had a sense that you're "physically" with them, they're less likely to be inactive and idle and unresponsive to feedback. I believe this is something you can prevent in advance by visiting them on the day both sides agree on a partnership. This removes a feeling of the partnership being "virtual" and "inauthentic".

Talking with the team I can identify as well the issues and potential solutions.
