One thing I’ve found helpful is to help my client understand how their request relates to the overall value of the product and/or where they benefit from other’s requests. More often than not, requests are finely nuanced expressions of similar or related ideas. There is usually a way to negotiate a new critical path to value for all clients, while keeping your key/strategic client happy and feeling prioritized. The critical thing is to know what drives value, how to talk about the value, and how value is realized by or within your clients. Features just don’t matter that much, it is the value they drive.

Then you look at how you can deliver their feature faster with reasonable tradeoffs, but you also talk to them about waiting and you accept a risk of customer loss.
