In high ressure situations, prioritizing safety is crucial. It's important to listen carefully to your crew's concerns and foster an open dialogue. Conducting thorough risk assessments allows us to identify potential hazards, and by adhering to established safety protocols, we can mitigate those risks effectively. Continuous monitoring of the environment and practices ensures that we maintain a safe working atmosphere. Remember, safety is a collective responsibility.

The initial step is not to shoot down any concerns raised, especially if the problem is where the crew are and you are not at the same location (remote). The freedom to raise Safety concerns and have it heard is precious. As much as you can you need to quantify the concern (RA/HIRA), and develop mitigation and contingencies. Have the crew involved and participating. Active participation, accountability and continuous evaluation by all involved is the most probable way of reducing a Risk. The other consideration is to change the location of the crew or eliminate the Risk by removing the crew completely. The Tolerability to Risk has to be referenced and considered.

Rehearse and leave nothing to chance.

It starts with having an open dialog. If a safety concern has been raised, then it's important to address the risks. If the scene involves intense physical contact or a complex stunt, then there needs to be a professional fight choreographer or stunt coordinator involved with the production. They can help create the desired aesthetic and (or) "intensity," but their number one priority is to ensure the safety of all involve. Review the scene at a snail's pace, ensure that the people evolve consent to any and all forms of contact, examine hazards that could cause injury, and once the blocking or choreography of the scene is set and safe to repeat, do not add or improvise any new action without the expressed consent of all involved parties.

Even if you have specialised training yourself, it's always a good idea to bring in an expert. e.g., a stage combat director, violence choreographer, or an intimacy consultant. Always explain what the final result needs to be / look like. Work out a plan with the crew/cast on how to get it done.

When I'm directing mime or movement pieces, especially in proscenium, I've found a trick with high-intensity stunts. Instead of always going full-out, I often have performers "mark" movements or focus on expressions. It sounds odd, but it works wonders. It gives performers a breather, letting them nail other parts without stressing about big stunts. Plus, it's easier on their bodies. The magic happens when I finally call for a full-intensity run. The energy just explodes – like they've been holding back all this potential. Sure, we still need those full-out rehearsals for muscle memory, but this mix keeps everyone fresh and focused. It's all about finding that sweet spot between pushing hard and playing it smart.

Walk the scene with voice only, no action, just walking the scene, speaking outloud what you think the character would be doing, as the acotr or the director, like, "Character 1 you will walk stage right to Character 2 plant your feet, facing Up Right, Below Character 2 at a 45 degree angle to the Up Right corner of the stage, Square off shoulders and this is where the first grab will take place". Then you rehearse the grab. If you're not skilled in hand to hand stage combat please please please hire someone who is trained. I've seen too many situation where people have been badly hurt from not choreographing a fight and having to go the hospital to get stitches when the person being hit had braces and they lacerated his skin below his lip.

(not what the actor would do) - Rehearse a lot! Rehearse in slow motion, mark the space, speak out the action (e.g., "now I grab the hand, push"). Rehearse again in full speed, until it becomes muscle memory. - Let the cast work out some things on their own as well

Rehearse rehearse rehearse and then when you think you are ready, rehearse again, remember practice makes perfect and perfection is hardly ever achieved
