For sharing files on unsecured wifi it's always preferable to use VPN so data will be safe also as an add-on secure layer file can be password protected . even if it reaches the wrong hands still data will be secure.

I would completely avoid sending any documents or CAD files using unsecured free network, reason being; 1. Even if the needed documents are sent, there is a high chance of the documents/ being broken or the files turning out to be unusable. 2. There could be documents that you don't recognise being attached to your original document sometimes viruses sometimes other files that you didn't send. 3. Your information such as IP adress, email adress or even who you are sending to being revealed is only few things that could happen if random network is used for important work. 4. CAD files are usually large and alot of the free networks don't have the network speed to send CAD files.
