Creating a revenue recognition policy is extremely important to reducing conflict amongst leadership. This policy should address the most frequent sources of income for the organization and create a map to the ending recognition result. For example, if the organization receives multiple fee-for-service contracts, the revenue recognition policy should map out how revenue is recognized across the life of these contracts. This policy should be Board reviewed and approved which should reduce any confusion or tension at the Board level. The Finance team should be heavily involved in the process and frequent and ongoing collaboration between the Finance and Development teams is also critical to increasing harmony and alignment.
