I trained new hires in safe work practices for Norfolk Southern Corporation for 5 years; my experience was that safety indeed needs to be a cultural aspect of your organization. One of the best ways to do this is by combining classroom and hands on experiences. Different people learn differently, and one size doesn’t fit all. I would explain the safe work practices in class, demonstrate them in the outside training area, and then have new hires practice what I had shown them. This proved to be very effective, but is not always possible in a training environment, particularly one such as manufacturing, where there simply can’t be mock ups of equipment. In these instances, it becomes much more difficult to instill safe behaviors.
