There is only so much signature, policies one can write and maintain.Scaling signatures also is quite difficult. Firewalls that employ AI & machine learning to detect and thwart attacks on scale based on different behaviour patterns. Organizations are employing identity based firewall which develop baseline's of client's activities and blocking any anomalies at scale at next trends in firewall. With growth in AI firewalls would have capability to learn, mitigate zero day attacks.Many organizations now offer Firewall as a Service instead of deploying on premise applications

Additionally, there's a growing emphasis on integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities into application firewalls to enhance threat detection and response. However, challenges remain in effectively leveraging these technologies while minimizing false positives and adapting to evolving threats.

From my experience as a cybersecurity professional, one of the most impactful features is anomaly-based detection. For example, while working with a financial services client, we implemented an anomaly-based detection system that identified unusual patterns in user behavior. Application firewalls are facing challenges due to the increased complexity of applications, SSL/TLS encryption, cloud and container environments, API security, advanced threats, and scalability issues. Emerging trends include the use of machine learning and AI, cloud-native solutions, API security tools, behavioral analysis, and integration with DevOps processes to enhance application firewall technology and address these challenges.

In a deployment for a healthcare provider, the application firewall initially flagged legitimate traffic as malicious, disrupting service delivery. Beyond the technical aspects, it's important to consider the human element in application firewall management.
