What do you do if your resume has a lengthy work history?

I have seen too many job seekers try to list every single detail on their resume. This is a huge mistake. Especially if you have a really long work history. The hiring manager will probably not read every single word, so make sure that you shorten it a bit. Only include details and achievements that are the most relevant to the position you are targeting. Your resume is not meant to list every single thing that you have done in your career. It is meant to attract the attention of the hiring manager just enough to make them want to bring you in for an interview. Trust me, you can always go into more details during the interview. You need to dangle the carrot in front of their face first!

I would add: To effectively manage a lengthy work history on your resume using the STAR method👇👇 1️⃣ Situation: Identify the specific roles and experiences that are most relevant to the job you're applying for. 2️⃣ Task: Determine the key responsibilities and achievements from each role that align with the job requirements. 3️⃣ Action: Condense the descriptions of your past positions by focusing on the actions you took and the skills you utilized or developed. 4️⃣ Result: Highlight the outcomes and impacts of your actions in each role, showcasing your contributions and accomplishments succinctly.

Focus on relevant and recent accomplishments. Your current employment should have more relevant bullets than your previous employment, let's say 3 to 6 bullets if you're progressing in your career. Focus on what experience is required by the company i.e. what you are now.

AT first, you need to focus on relevance and brevity while tailoring your resume to highlight the most relevant experiences for the position you're applying for. Through timelines, you can display older roles or summarize them to save space. Emphasize achievements and skills gained throughout your career. Consider a functional or hybrid resume format to organize skills and accomplishments.

Highlight the most relevant and impactful roles in the recent decade, and briefly mention earlier positions to show your career progression. Use a summary or profile section to provide an overview of your skills and achievements, emphasizing those most relevant to the job. There are several options in condensing your lengthy work history into 10-15 years. I prefer to initially showcase adaptability by detailing my various skills in list format. I trickle it down to providing examples of where those skills were applied, and the resulting successful outcome. Lastly, I like to show examples of overcoming a presented obstacle in an effort to show how I retreat, reflect, assess, and engage.

No recruiter wants to read a five-page resume. Having a lengthy resume can set a recruiter against you before they have a chance to read your qualifications. Focus on the your most recent 10 years of experience. Go in depth into the roles and achievements you have had in that time period. You can still list earlier positions, however, make sure they are not a focal point of your resume. Companies want to see what you have done in recent years and how it can help further their organization.

If a hiring manager is looking at the details of a job you did in 1998, then you are NOT going to get hired for a job here in 2024, trust me! 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐬 "𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 so if something on your resume does not support your ability to do the job for which you are applying today, then in it very much must be scrutinized as to whether to include it at all... this takes us to the 10-year rule. As a general rule, jobs that we had 10 years ago should not be included in our resumes unless that job overlapped, ie started in 2010 and ended in 2017.

If you have a longggg work history, then that is amazing! But you don't want to highlight every detail on your resume. A great format can help you prioritize the information that is the most relevant to each position. Here are the formatting sections that I would modify each time you apply. 1. The Headline (target position). 2. The Summary. (think relevant skills and experience). 3. The Highlights. (Boom, power-added achievements that are highly relevant). 4. The keywords section. (pulled directly from the JD). Good luck!

If you have lists of employment who's progressing toward his or her careers, a chronological resume is preferable because it's easily scannable by the ATS system.

The look and format of your resume is crucially important as it is very difficult for a recruiter to overcome their initial negative reaction when they see a poorly designed resume. Each section should be clearly visible and distinguishable. A reader should be able to pick up your resume and quickly be able to see your skills, work experience, education, etc.

Achievements are the bread and butter for your resume. If you are struggling to prioritize information on your long and extensive resume, then this is a great place to start. You should always focus on your results and impact, and how that relates to the position that you are applying to. And as we all know, it is important to add quantification where you can. Quantification will stand out to the hiring manager 1,000x more than not including it (see what I did there?!). Try using using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for impact. Describe the situation or problem you faced, outline the specific tasks you undertook, explain the actions you took to address the challenge, and conclude with the results you achieved.

Don't just tell them. Showing how you increased sales, improved organization efficiencies, or other noticeable achievements will let the reader know that you are a professional.

For roles more than 10-15 years ago I like to make a "Additional Experience" section and list the roles and the dates of employment. I do not go into additional details on the roles, as the primary focus of your resume should be your most recent work. Remember, the job of the resume is to GET YOU THE INTERVIEW! You will be able to expand on your qualifications and experience when you are sitting in front of the recruiter!

The Skills or Areas of Expertise section is one of the most critical parts of your resume. Focus on skills that are relevant to the job you are applying for. This section of your resume should continuously be updated as you acquire new skills and as you apply for different positions. If you see that a job positing is looking for ten different skills, and you have all those skills, make sure they are documented on your resume!

I haven't seen someone mention this, but I would consolidate similar roles into the same experience sections. If you did the same job at 4 locations; with the same title, why not clump them together? I do not need to see you did something, written 4 times, on the same resume. I would rather see a totality of the duty and not have to search through 4 different roles when it is blisteringly clear they are the same. So it would look like: JOB TITLE Job Location 1, Dates Worked Job Location 2, Dates Worked Job Location 3, Dates Worked Experience 1 Experience 2 Experience 3 And this way you save me time, your space, and you have more room for other skills that you are now freeing up without repeating.
