Often a bigger innovative leap may be required, with potentially more risk and higher cost. Both approaches follow PDCA and must operate together. If a big Innovative Leap is made, is it vital to give time for it to “bed in” and analyse the effect of the change, so that the “Check” part of PDCA is effective. The optimum strategy is therefore kaizen, kaizen, kaizen, leap, kaizen, kaizen, kaizen etc.

To enhance any form of productivity, dealers and manufactures need to constantly make improvements so they can produce the same level of output with fewer but better people. In addition to the challenge of widespread retirement, there are fewer people entering the automotive industry and manufacturing market sector so training and retraining has to go beyond just certification and into more of a qualified categories. I would agree. A meeting with the team would be most important. Find out what the "guys on the floor" think would improve production, work quality and safety. It's important for everyone to know they each play a crucial role in the company's success, and that there is always an open-door policy when it comes to an employees needs, thoughts, or concerns. Allow the employees the opportunity to envision the company's plans and goals. Make sure everyone knows each other and help to build relationships.

The main challenges that lead to reduced productivity are a lack of communication and a disconnect from your staff. If they don't feel valued, are not compensated fairly, and don't have an opportunity to voice their complaints without reprimand, your business will suffer. Businesses that reduce their employees to metrics suffer in the long run. You end up losing qualified staff, which ends up hurting services rendered and clients WILL notice. However, a crucial item to keep in mind is collecting good data on your current products thoughput, downtime, capacity and other similar elements. Continuous improvement is one great way to get the ball rolling. Going after the low-hanging fruit, 5S in your work areas, and targeted brainstorming to go after the quick simple solutions that require little input. Before getting into the bigger projects, I would first suggest locking down your current state. If you have procedures, but people fail to follow them, it may not help to try to get into improving your processes before solving the non-compliance issue first. I'm not saying process improvement is useless for this, but it is often easier and faster to accomplish without the formal process of a project. Make sure you do what you say and say what you do before you try to improve those things.
