What do you do if you want to enhance data analysis as a GIS professional using new technology?

What I have found working very well in my Master's thesis is integrating machine learning, specifically the random forest algorithm. This approach involves using high res satellite imagery (10-30m) from Google earth engine as well as local municipality data. Then applying RF to recognize patterns and predict outcomes, flood risks in my case. By training the model on historical data, it learns to identify flood prone areas accurately. Embedding these models into tools like ArcGIS allows for real time, dynamic mapping and analysis. This method boosts analytical capabilities and gives higher accuracy.

Here is simple example workflow utilizing AWS: Data Storage: Store your geospatial data in Amazon S3, a scalable object storage service. Database Management: Use Amazon RDS to manage your geospatial database. PostGIS extension in RDS supports spatial data. Data Processing: Use Amazon EC2 instances to run your GIS software. You can scale up the resources as needed, even automatically utilizing auto-scaling groups. Analysis: Use AWS Lambda for serverless computing. You can run code in response to events, such as changes in your S3 bucket. Visualization: Use Amazon QuickSight to visualize your geospatial data and share insights.

Depends on the needs or requirement, sometime embracing clouds not always a good things when we talked about GIS. Application on GEE not always having more useful feature compared to ArcGIS. Cloud computing has made accessibility to data greater. I can remember when I made my Master's thesis, I had to get data shipped from Afghanistan on CD's. Now data are accessible and often in near real time

1- Utilize big data analytics: which provide valuable insights for GIS analysis. 2- Techniques such as distributed processing, parallel computing, and machine learning algorithms can be applied to analyze vast amounts of spatial data. 2- Explore geospatial machine learning: For example, machine learning algorithms to classify land cover types in satellite imagery, detect objects in LiDAR data, etc. 3- Adopt real-time data analysis: such as monitoring environmental conditions, tracking assets, By integrating real-time data sources, such as sensors, GPS. 4. Stay updated with GIS software advancements workflows. Take advantage of features like spatial statistics, network analysis, or 3D visualization to expand your analytical capabilities.

As the GIS market is very dynamic, it is necessary to always be aware of new technologies in the area, a good way is to seek specializations in practical courses on new platforms on the internet itself, whether linked to programming languages or the same software and processes linked to GIS.

Well , Truly leverage the power of GIS, learning coding languages such as Python or HTML/ CSS/ react JavaScript and is essential. These skills enable customization and automation of processes, leading to more insightful analysis and faster decision-making.

Learning programming languages like MATLAB, VBA, Python, and R has been indispensable in my career as a GIS analyst. These tools allow me to work more efficiently by allowing for easy task automation, data cleaning, and conduction of analyses, algorithmically. On a day-to-day, I use batch processing for handling large datasets and I have also appled both supervised and unsupervised machine learning using R for image classification. I also leverage R and Python for advanced data visualization, using tools like ggplot, tmap, ggmap, Plotly, Dash, and Folium. This skill set has definitely set me apart and made me faster, smarter, and more effective in tackling complex GIS challenges.

L'internet des objets permet essentiellement d'avoir les données en temps réel. Les objets les plus utilisées restent les smartphones et les montres pour par exemple avoir l'état de fréquentation d'un lieu en temps réel. Il permet de répondre à une question à un temps T ou de créer des alertes. La plus part des études faites actuellement ne sont pas en temps réel car il faut une grande quantités de données pour avoir une analyse de bonnes qualités et prendre une meilleure décision.

You will try to avoid as much as possible to use AI as an integrated tool or an input for any GIS analysis as for GIS, the main purpose and strength resides into processing raw, unprocessed data to have accurate results. You may use AI as a post process applied to already generated data by GIS.

My Two-Fold strategy for successing in applying Deep Learning to the geospatial realm: 1. Structured learning: begin your journey with some lessons about the fundamentals of DL and ML. The Internet is full of reliable and free sources. I recommend the lessons from MIT on YouTube. Learn from people with real experience in the field, and avoid low quality courses and training programs. 2. Hans-On application: Theory without practice is like a car without fuel. Choose a simple problem, adequate to the resources you have within reach, and try to solve it. Try to progressively increase the difficulty of your targets. The sooner you adopt these techniques, the better it will be for your career. Sounds daunting but the journey is rewarding.

Complement spatial with non spatial data to give a rich contextual analysis of spatial information with robust metadata and key metrics. Most of the time, spatial analysis is not independent and is applied within a certain context. For example, route analysis will not only depend on spatial metrics like distance but also on aspects such as road conditions, weather etc. So, rich analysis requires robust complementary non-spatial data
