What do you do if administrators and teachers clash?

As principal, I addressed clashes between administrators and teachers by facilitating open communication and fostering a culture of collaboration and mutual respect. I also emphasized the shared goal of promoting student success and encourage finding common ground to work towards this objective. Implementing conflict resolution strategies, such as mediation or facilitated discussions, helps in resolving conflicts amicably. Additionally, I provided professional development opportunities focused on effective communication and conflict resolution skills. Ultimately, by promoting a positive working environment and prioritizing teamwork, I aimed to mitigate clashes and promote a harmonious school community focused on student achievement.

Whether it revolves around curriculum, instruction, assessment, resources, policies, procedures, or expectations, it's imperative to understand the specific issues at hand. Above all, the resolution process should remain student-centered, prioritizing their learning and well-being. By focusing on the impact on students and their educational experience, we can effectively navigate conflicts and work towards constructive solutions that benefit all stakeholders involved.

While it's hopeful that both administrators and educators share the goal of providing high-quality education, the reality is sometimes different. It's necessary to actively seek common ground and maintain professionalism, as this can facilitate improved communication and collaboration despite any differences that may arise.

Schools function as social institutions with diverse individuals and ideas. It's crucial to prioritize the needs of students. Rather than resorting to blame, accusations, criticisms, or attacks on others, which can lead to defensiveness and resentment, focus on "I" statements, behaviors, and outcomes. Provide constructive suggestions that are realistic and beneficial for the improvement of everyone involved.

First of all ask why are the clashes happening? Around what kind of issues. Identify the key areas with oppositional forces. Then set about addressing school culture and climate. Ensure everyone understands the purpose of the organisation and reconnects to why they joined it. Identify the road forward with collaboration and representation of voice. Perhaps use a back to the future protocol - what would it look like, sound like feel like, if it were going well? Where do we stand now? What are the steps we need to take to move forward? Where will we start? Who will be responsible for the actions? How will we know we are achieiing them? Set up some agreed norms of professional behaviour, the Norms of collaboration are a good place to start.

When conflicts arise between administrators and teachers, it not only affects the morale and productivity within the workplace but also hinders the overall effectiveness of providing quality education to students. Both should approach this situation with professionalism, open-mindedness, and a willingness to seek a beneficial resolution for all. Effective communication, active listening, and a commitment to finding common ground are essential in addressing and resolving conflicts constructively. Open dialogue and mediation could be valuable tools in addressing the issues. Both must express their concerns, perspectives and proposed solutions respectfully and collaboratively.
