Spend more time in problem space. We as problem-solvers are wired towards finding a solution. Reason and validate if this is really a problem. If so, then what causes the manifestation of this problem. Go deeper by: - 5 WHYs : generally by third WHY, you will discover the real reason. - Segment: Break the problem by user personas: age, social status, device type etc. - Size the problem: by direct data or using proxies

One Critical thinking Technique that I always use is called "Steps" I try to break down every problem statement into steps that I will take to solve it and then each Step will have their own Sub Steps. For Example: Let us say we want to develop something post our business evaluation: I will write down the steps: 1. Set up a meeting with Dev team/Dev Leaders. 2. Have a document ready of everything that has been done around the problem statement. (This Step will have a lot of Sub Steps - Which will be around Product Roadmap, Tasks Breakups, Sprint Planning etc) 3. Work around my thought process around the timelines and prospective solutions etc. This approach has helped me plan out every single Business or technical approach

Once you've got a clear view of the problem, you're all set to steer your product development in the right direction.

Selecting the right problem space is the initial and paramount step in any critical thinking approach. A great technique for identifying customer programs is "body-storming" where you literally act out the motions that your customers go through. By "putting yourself in their shoes" you will find issues you never realized that can't be seen by just describing the experience

Break It Down: Instead of tackling a big problem all at once, break it into smaller, easier-to-handle pieces. This makes it less overwhelming and helps you focus on what's most important. It also helps you spot any obstacles and figure out how to deal with them. See Different Views: Look at the problem from different angles. This gives you a better understanding and helps you come up with more creative solutions. It also lets you think about possible objections and how to respond to them. Make sure the information you're using is good. Check where it came from, watch out for biases, and know the difference between facts and opinions.

While brainstorming is an old school term, it certainly has not lost its place in our industry. Our teams best solutions come when we gather together, identify the problem and respect each and every suggestion on how to solve the current problem at hand. Face it, we are all different and we have different perspectives. The worst position we can take is one where we act alone, or dismiss our teammates input. When we brainstorm, by default, we are going to end up utilizing divergent and lateral thinking skills.

I agree with this. If you have a diverse skilled team supporting you, the best thing is to consult them for their possible solutions. If provided a safe environment to explore, many solutions will be generated and the likelihood of even seemingly impossible situations have potential to be resolved.

One powerful approach I've found effective is the power of group brainstorming, which sparks lateral thinking and creative ideation. I recommend initiating a brainstorming session with your team. During this collaborative exchange, encourage everyone to share their ideas freely, unburdened by the constraints of feasibility. Every idea, no matter how unconventional, holds value at this stage. Once the brainstorming session concludes, compile all the proposed solutions. The next steps involve a series of filtration rounds, prioritization, and alignment discussions with stakeholders. While this journey may require multiple iterations, it's an excellent starting point for gathering a diverse array of ideas.

One of the techniques that is use the most is the Opportunity Solution Tree by Teresa Torres. It helps to explore and organise potential opportunities and solutions related to a specific challenge or goal. The tree consists of two main branches: Opportunity Branch: 1) Identify Areas: Find broad areas for improvement. 2) Define Problems: Break down opportunities into specific problems. 3) Assess Impact: Evaluate the impact of each problem and prioritise. Solution Branch: 1) Generate Solutions: Brainstorm solutions for each problem. 2) Identify Risks: Consider potential challenges and risks for each solution. 3) Validate: Assess the feasibility and effectiveness of each solution.

Se identificó y se comienza con la exploración para saber los que y los como del producto que se va a construir, el tener claro las capacidades y alcances deberá ser en conjunto con las áreas que lo van a ejecutar, conocer los riesgos que puede implicar y tener muy claro la capacidad de cada unidad de negocio para poder tener soluciones alternas que no desvien el plan original del propósito del producto. El producto es una idea, pero la ejecución es una contribución de trabajo en equipo, por lo que las alternativas y poder corregir desviaciones en equipo debe ser una parte fundamental de la organización.

This kind of lateral thinking encourages teams to step outside conventional frameworks, fostering innovation and creativity in addressing customer needs.

Divergent thinking is critical here. Think of a table, your hypothesis solution rests on the legs of your divergent thought. Unique group thinking is helpful here, designer, developer, QA, data science, behavioral science, etc. The farther apart your ideas are, the better this helps ensure a broad view and ads strength to your hypothesis.

When it comes to evaluating alternatives for product development, it's like picking the best tool for the job. I see it as a blend of financial sense, user benefits, and technical feasibility. Much like Tesla's careful evaluation of battery tech feasibility. Personally, I lean toward the Effort-Value-Impact trio: Effort: How much sweat will it take to build this solution? Value: What's the user benefit, and how does it enhance their experience? Impact: What's the business gain? More revenue, user growth, or retention? Think of it as finding the right puzzle piece that completes the picture.

When evaluating alternatives or solutions, here are the steps that I use by using the Value vs. Complexity Quadrant: 1. Identify the criteria for evaluation 2. Assign values to each criterion 3 Rate each alternative based on the assigned criteria 4. Plot each alternative on the matrix based on its value and complexity 5. Divide the alternatives into the four quadrants 6. Prioritize the alternatives in the high value/low complexity quadrant 7. Select the best alternative based on its alignment with problem criteria and customer needs, and its value relative to its complexity. By using the Value vs. Complexity Quadrant, PMs can evaluate alternatives and prioritize them based on their potential impact and feasibility.

There are a bunch of frameworks that you can read about online that help in evaluating solutions. My go-to framework is - Effort | Value | Impact Effort - how much effort would it take to build this solution? Value - What is the value add for customers? How is this helping our users? Impact - What is the business impact? Is it more revenue, user acquisition, retention? Use these three parameters to compare the solutions.

The next crucial step is to evaluate alternatives. This involves deploying critical thinking skills like critical analysis, logic, and evidence. These skills are instrumental in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of each alternative, comparing them against problem criteria and customer needs, and testing them with data and feedback. Through this process, we ensure that the chosen solution is not only innovative but also feasible, desirable, and valuable for addressing the identified problem.

Having alternative solutions for a problem is bliss, specially when you are dealing with customers directly. We all love options, customers are not different. Let’s say you have 3 alternative solutions for problem #1 - A, B and C. And according your understanding solution B is the one you can deliver on time, work best to take your product forward and etc. When you put your alternatives to customers explain all three and try to emphasise on B time and time in your discussion. It will be easy for you and customer to take a quick decision. Customer will not have doubt in mind that there could be other options. Try it out, might not work always as we have plenty of problems to solve and finding alternatives also not that easy.

One can use the following critical thinking techniques to implement the solution for Product development: 1) Set SMART goals to define their product objectives and measure their progress. 2) Conduct a SWOT analysis to evaluate their product strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. 3) Use a RACI matrix to assign roles and responsibilities for their product tasks and activities.

Having a phased approach in which we released our solutions in batches in my opinion worked out the best for me. This allowed us to have multiple mini product development cycles of plan do check and act. One crucial thing was that we stuck to our agreed scope or basis of design, this allowed all stakeholders to have a clear picture of the implementation cycle and avoid delays with our product revision release. If possible before implementing try to AB-test the solution or solutions. This will definitely show you if your metrics will be affected and how.

La implementación no debe ser dolorora, siempre que la arquitectura sea diseñada de manera adecuada, si la arquitectura no se encuentra con la estructura debida, la implementación será un ir y venir de correcciones sobre la hora. No puede existir una implementación sin un diseño de solución adecuado, y con los arquitectos debes de trabajar desde el día 0 para la concepción de la solución, la claridad de alcances es una parte fundamental, por lo que no existe implementación, sin diseño.

Un enfoque interesante puede ser el desarrollo de una prueba de concepto antes de entrar de lleno en el desarrollo de un producto completo. La prueba de concepto te da la posibilidad de probar el concepto de la solución que nos imaginamos y validar con personas en el contexto en donde existe el problema que queremos resolver. No tienes que invertir ingentes cantidad de dinero para validar la factibilidad de la solución imaginada. Podemos implementar el uso de la metodología Lean Startup.

Critical thinking is a fundamental tecnique for a product development manager but it's even more important clearly understand the problem and the target of the analysis. Studying the market and having a deep knowledge of competitors and customer needs is the starting point and, on this basis, critical thinking is an excellent way to evaluate different possibilities. Mental constrains or preconcept are not allowed in this phase and all the information must be checked by many points of view. Detailed data analysis can bring very often to right choice but I also believe that sometimes, in a few cases, just because future trends are not 100% predictable, and innovative products have no past... instinct can help to find the right way too.

Product development is a series of activity from idea generation to launch of product. The failures can occur at any of 5 stages, hence robust 360 approach should be there in each stage. The 4th step of implementing the solution is a critical step as in here the product will hand over from development to bulk execution. Any hand over there can be communication gaps, Skill gaps & Technology gaps. It can over come by early engaging of development with bulk execution with defined activates such as trainings, trial run & pilot run. It is utmost important to build a solid communication channel for both teams to evaluate and share the learnings of each stage.

Incorporar y desarrollar un producto es muy complicado y de ahí la importancia del pensamiento crítico. Dicen que el amor es ciego y no ve muchas veces la realidad.. De ahí que no podemos enamorarnos de desarrollar un producto sin antes conocer la opinión de todos los stakeholders (internos, externos, primarios, secundarios, directos, indirectos..) Usar el pensamiento crítico con todos ellos es vital. Utilizar mapas de empatía para comprender las necesidades, deseos, motivaciones o frustraciones de los usuarios nos ayudara en la toma de decisiones. Hay muchas formas, metodologías que se pueden adoptar para la creación y entrega de valor sea al cliente o usuario final. La clave es tener claro la visión estratégica de la organización, la cultura de la empresa, el pensamiento de la alta dirección o directivos.
