I've seen Finance and Legal functions remain organized functionally even in cross-functional organizations and I think there is room to experiment more with embedding those functions in cross-functional teams the way we see it with product management, engineering and design for example. I think it's also key to consider whether or not you need to differentiate people management structure from output/team management structures.

Certainly not what you want in the very beginning of a startup. Instead, you want to have a few (2-4) people who are willing and able to help each other out in any aspect of the business (and don't take it personal if somebody else takes "your" job that you would have had in a big corporate).

Please note that it is really hard to scale that model with more than 20 people, so you can always keep it for the top management, core team, or C-levels.

If your goal is more clear and task oriented you may try to define everything and make a lot of rules and hierarchy But if your goal needs creativity and innovation you can get there faster by giving power to people and let them decide how to do or even what to do

Some of the structures recommend in here if not done properly can create inefficiency. Which can be detrimental for an early stage company.

It is really hard to keep the balance. You will evolve, and learn a lot from your team and other startup founders. It is important to join founder communities and events to share the experience.

No team structure is the best structure in an early stage startup! While a startup is in it's building phase, emphasis should be on work and not structures. Once the core team is formed, structures can be brought in. Building structures can be a pricey affair. Not just money but also pseudo designations can do lasting damage!

Ongoing, open and fully transparent discussions on who and how the projects and work is being done and the accountability of those efforts is widely under estimated in most start ups from my experience.

Personalities matter more than structure in the very beginning. You need people that are able to handle chaotic structures (and are okay with it) but still strive to come to a scalable structure in the future (meaning that they shouldn't want to stay in the status quo.)

Early Stage Startup requires a strong team. Loyal members who make work priority, because it will take a lot to built an Organisation and taking it to next level.
