Look. Most people have no idea what a nanometer is. A human hair is about 80 microns or 80000 nanometers. So that would be like comparing a yard to 50 miles. This brings it into perspective

For Example if I say this nano materials has the size of 0.26 nm they would not find it relatable, but if I say it's 1000 times thinner than a human hair, like comparing the size of nanoparticles to common objects. This would build a picture in the mind and develop interest. Visuals are a game-changer, so I use simple diagrams, videos, and infographics to break down complex concepts. It’s also important to highlight real-world applications, showing how nanotechnology impacts daily life—whether it’s in medicine, electronics, or environmental solutions.

When communicating nanotechnology, understanding your audience is essential to make your message impactful. For students, I find that analogies work wonders, like comparing a nanometer to how a football field compares to a single blade of grass. Adding engaging visuals, like videos or animations, can bring abstract concepts to life. On the other hand, for policymakers, I focus on presenting real-world implications. Highlighting ethical, social, and environmental impacts, such as how nanotechnology could revolutionize sustainable energy or improve public health, connects the science to societal benefits. Tailoring the approach ensures your message resonates, no matter the audience.

It’s important to make clear that everything ‘nano’ is ‘science’. As an example, nanomedicine is medicine, and not something magical. Equally important, there’s quite a bit of medicine that people should be reminded is nanomedicine, for example the mRNA COVID vaccines.

After 30+ presentations about risk and benefits of nanomaterials my conclusions are: 1 good slide concerning how nanotechnology helps is better than 20 slides dealing with research on nanosafety. E.g. nanosilver: less nosocomial infections, less people die. nanocopper: as a fertilizer, you use grams per hectare instead of kilograms of copper sulfate. easy to clean nanocoatings help solar cells to stay clean and keep high efficency. etc..... And of course always point out, that no particle release from liquids or coatings. This avoids any "like-asbestous" discussion. At the end we avoided a situation similar to GMO, which have been banned, but innovation with nanomaterials experienced quite a set back in the last 15 years.

A few aspects should be clearly highlighted and explained here. I can think of at least, two. One, going from macroscale to nanoscale changes physical properties of the material of interest. Examples, gold nanoparticles, quantum dots etc. The physics and chemistry governing materials' properties become very different from those of macroscale. Second, as a result, novel interactions between such nanomaterials and objects of interest, like cells, biological tissues come to life. These interactions are not feasible for macroscale objects. Hence, clear differences and benefits.

For example, I might explain how nanotechnology improves medicine by enabling targeted drug delivery, reducing side effects, or how it enhances solar panels for more efficient energy capture. For instance, I highlight how nanotechnology enhances healthcare through breakthroughs in disease diagnosis and targeted therapies while also improving sustainability by reducing energy waste. At the same time, I emphasize the importance of understanding potential risks, such as nanoparticle toxicity or environmental impact, and the ethical concerns surrounding its use. Acknowledging the complexity and citing evidence from credible research ensures transparency. By presenting both sides, I aim to foster an informed and nuanced discussion about nanotechnology's role in shaping our future.
