HDR can be great but it is very often overused, the key is to do the conversions on a layer and then blend in with the original image where appropriate to give it a more natural feel, you do not wish for people to say "that is an HDR image"

I wonder why it’s even used. Seems like the whole objective is to create an altered image and not let people know you have done it. So isn’t that a contradiction ? Seems like it may be better to work on a real image. Maybe even have to wait for the light to be just right ?
