It is important that we acknowledge such language barriers without pretending they don't exist or brushing them under the carpet. In my experience, I have had the privilege of working with teams in Italy and France while I resided in India. What aided us was transparency from Day 1 in addressing the difficulty faced by some of my Italian and French colleagues in conversing in English. Translations done by mutual colleagues helped during video conferences while online translators aided Teams chats. Learning basic phrases in French helped me greatly as well. It showcased my willingness to respect their tradition and language.

Some more strategies that can make a real difference: Clarify through Summaries: After discussing key points, summarise briefly to confirm mutual understanding. This can prevent miscommunication and align expectations. Use Simple, Clear Language: Avoid idioms, jargon, or overly complex phrases. Clear, straightforward language helps everyone stay on the same page, especially non-native speakers. Follow Up in Writing: Send a recap email highlighting main points and action items after meetings. Written follow-ups reinforce understanding and allow partners to review at their own pace. Encourage Questions and Feedback: Creating a comfortable space for questions helps clarify any confusion immediately and improves long-term collaboration.

I believe whilst plenty of tools are there and of course learning key phrases of different languages can help one manage, however the effectivity of conversation cannot happen through these dependencies. The key is to have an ecosystem that standardises many differences, including language and empowers delegates and educational consultants to indulge in meaningful dialogue. Platforms like NACAC, IACAC, IC3, TOC and many more are doing great work to provide the above said ecosystem.
