I would say the bigger issue could be the alignment of project goals and personal goals with company goals. From my experience, well-defined company goals make it easier to map objectives at successive lower levels, such as at the project or department level. However, the absence of such goals often leads to misalignment and opportunistic behavior.

This approach creates a space where concerns or challenges can be raised early, giving us the chance to address them proactively. By keeping the momentum with regular feedback and open, inclusive communication, we can ensure that individual and project goals stay aligned and work together seamlessly.

Effective project management starts with clear goals, aligned priorities, and accountability across all levels. It also needs to be fluid enough to change when conditions change. This gets trickier with a distributed team. Aligning individual drivers and goals, agreeing to buy-in on the project, and focusing on why the project is happening all help align the team. Having an informal place to disagree and explore options really help people align. This happens naturally in an office, but it's harder when the team is distributed. My advice is to combine dedicated meetings (few and short), individual focus work, and co-located focus work (can be as easy as an open call where people work on their own tasks, but have access to each other).

Ensuring that key project objectives are well identified and communicated with team to avoid conflict of interest. This because in any case where a team member's objectives supersites that of the project there is a likelihood that the project might fail. Furthermore if should incase one or more of the objectives of the project have to change along the project cycle it is important for team members to be informed officially with workshops held for proposals to be made for the benefit of all project team members.
