Navigating power dynamics in a complex IT consulting project requires a balance of emotional intelligence, clear communication, and strategic stakeholder management. Start by identifying key stakeholders and understanding their priorities, as misaligned expectations often lead to tension. Foster collaboration by creating an open environment where team members feel heard, and address conflicts early with tact and impartiality. Use data-driven insights to anchor discussions and depersonalize disagreements. Lastly, adapt your leadership style to align with the team’s needs, leveraging influence rather than authority to build trust and guide the project toward its goals.

I don't know the perfect solution either. There can always be people with very good expertise who poison the atmosphere through power games. But you want to keep this person because of their expertise. One approach is to mentally support other team members. It is important to communicate to the team that the dynamics are recognised. Then the team feels better understood and can deal with it better.

Dealing with power dynamics can be tricky, but I agree it’s key to keep things smooth. Besides setting clear roles and open communication, I think aligning everyone on the main goals from the start could help avoid conflicts and keep the team focused. For example, in a hypothetical SAP MM project, organizing workshops where all team members could share their input might be a good way to build trust and collaboration. I also believe that relying on data-driven decisions would help keep things fair and reduce personal biases.
